Weight: 171 lbs

Distance: 5K

Time: 43.10 mins

How it started

It started with one goal...to lose weight. I have tried a couple of diets, gym, etc. last 2009. Come 2010, I really decided to trim down the weight. From 2009, as far as I can remember, I was 200+ lbs. January 2010, I was 188 lbs. As I was watching one early morning shows in one local channel on a weekend, there I saw a significant topic which boosted my desire to lose. I had my self checked and later on indulged on the program.

They gave me a 500-calorie diet which I should follow on a daily basis and good for 1 month. I don't recommend trying this without a supervision of your doctor or if you have an active lifestyle. You will really pass out. And so it started. My diet in a nutshell would be:

Morning:

- a piece of whole wheat/grain bread

- a cup of coffee, with 1 teaspoon of creamer and 1 sachet of artificial sweetener

* Unlimited coffee throughout the day as long as you follow the mixture per cup *

Lunch/Dinner:

- 500 grams of meat (either fish, pork or beef, and chicken breast

- salad greens (any kind of lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber/turnips)

- 1 apple

- water/coffee (drink at least 3 liters of water a day).

* of note, no strenous activities were done *

I religiously followed the above regimen and lost around 10-12 lbs after a month.

After I have finished the "diet" part, I'm now ready to start exercising. I re-started badminton, and then later into Running. Running was not really part of my plan. One of my colleagues just enticed me to join a running event, the NatGeo Earth Day Run 2010. And pushed me to do 5K!!?? I'm not good at math and especially distances. So I said yes only to find out upon registration how long 5K was!!! But can't back out. All that went to my mind was to train and be able to finish the race. So I started running around Sun Valley's Parish Park.

I never really tried running, though I've tried it a couple of times on the same park. I remembered stopping every 5-10 meters and I know that was bad. And then I focused and was able to run 5 round around the park and then got conscious of the time spent for every round. Until a few weeks prior to the race, I was able to go 10 rounds in about 40-45 mins. :) It was really an accomplishment for me. From a few meters to running 10 rounds, that was something.

Until April 18 came for the run. I was nervous and excited at the same time. I finished my first 5K run in about 43 mins. :)

Now I'm planning and training for my next run...
